Please join Transform Mid-Atlantic (TMA) for an interactive faculty development webinar with Richard Kiely, Associate Vice Provost for Engagement and Land-Grant Affairs and Director, Academic Initiatives, Einhorn Center for Community Engagement at Cornell University on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, 4:00-6:00pm via zoom.

This workshop traces Cornell’s evolution toward a more transformative, institution‑wide model of community engagement—one that aligns academic priorities with community needs and institutional strategy. Dr. Kiely will highlight the “game‑changing” metrics, practices, and lessons that enabled the shift from isolated, center‑driven programs to collaborative partnerships that deepen and sustain engagement across colleges, departments and administrative units. Through individual reflection and small‑group activities, participants will identify concrete and actionable strategies for scaling high‑quality, mission‑aligned engagement using a customizable institutionalization rubric designed to support sustainable, system‑level change.

Guest Speaker:

Richard Kiely stewards the design and implementation of the Engaged College Initiative; oversees academic programs and initiatives and offers general advising to faculty, staff and students interested in incorporating community-engaged learning into their teaching and research endeavors.

In 2002, Dr. Kiely received his Ph.D. from Cornell University and from 2002 to 2006, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Lifelong Education, Policy and Administration at the University of Georgia. In 2005, he was recognized nationally as a John Glenn Scholar in Service-Learning for research that developed a transformative service-learning model.

In 2011, 2014 and 2015, he served as co-editor of two special sections on global service-learning for the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning. He is a co-author of Community-Based Global Learning: The Theory and Practice of Ethical Engagement at Home and Abroad (2018) and co-founder of the Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative, a multi-institutional network advancing ethical, critical and aspirationally de-colonial community-based learning and research for more just, inclusive and sustainable communities.

He was the inaugural director of Cornell’s Center for Community-Engaged Learning and Research (2011-2015).
